Are You Drinking Enough Water?
Greetings Athletes!
So how much water should you be drinking a day? When I was working in the corporate world, I would sometimes go to meetings (when we did those things before Covid!) and there was often someone with a 64 oz. jug of water. They would carry the jug around and drink from it all day trying to get their 64oz (8 cups) of water in. Intuitively, it seems like more water is good. It flushes your system and keeps it clean. But I often wondered where that number came from and wanted to know how much water we should be drinking.
After doing some reading online (Harvard Health, Mayo Clinic) it turns out we’re asking the wrong question. The question is, how much fluids should we be drinking? Depending upon your body composition, your body is made up of 50% to 70% of water. On average you lose about 11.5 cups of water everyday through your basic body functions, including breathing! So you need to replenish those fluids in your body. On average (I’m using this term a lot on purpose), 25% of that fluid comes from the foods we eat which equates to about 3 cups of water, leaving you with 8.6 cups that you need to take in… from fluids. This includes coffee, tea, juice and yes of course water.
So those 8 cups of water you should be drinking is based on research. So drink up!
All the best!
All the time!
